Here's a quote about 124 300E transmissions with some dates:
It was somewhere in the late 90 production run. All 91's have it and
a few of the late 90's also. About 50% of the 89 valve bodies can
be modified and almost all of the 90's, for first gear starts. It is a
factory mod, takes about 2.5 hours (R&R the valve body, D&A the
valve body, and modify which consists of removing one check ball).
