Its not something was going to get for a daily driver, more for a toy. The 190D
sits. I mostly drive the Jetta and Angie the pickup. I think the 190D had been
hit at one point, I've been unable to get it to ever drive right. It was
acceptable at one point but is quite mushy now. I don't care enough about it to
want to fix it anymore.
The Beetle was actually a fairly nice car, maybe a 5 out of 10 but at $2400 I
wasn't expecting perfection. We looked at another one on the way home that was
maybe a 7 for which the guy wanted $7500. I was surprised how bad the autostick
wasn't. Its an interesting system because its BOTH an automatic and a manual.
There is a torque converter but theres also a vacuum operated clutch which
activates when you put your hand on the shifter. In operation I got pretty good
with it pretty quick.
Anyway I really just wanted to drive it, I don't think I ever really was going
to buy it but you never know until you try.

Those air cooled engines have two major flaws for your application.

Weak to non-existent heat.

Valve adjustment interval is every 2500 miles, IIRC.  That means laying on the
cold wet ground in the winter, if you don't have a garage, or a lift.
