Not quite that bad. Oil change every 3,000 and valve adjustment every 6,000. If everything is working as it should and no air leaks anywhere then the heat works just fine.

Those air cooled engines have two major flaws for your application.

Weak to non-existent heat.

Valve adjustment interval is every 2500 miles, IIRC.  That means laying on the 
cold wet ground in the winter, if you don't have a garage, or a lift.
