Max, there is a tool with two prongs that stick into the
crosshatch in the bottom of chrome drain part. You would unscrew
that, clean the old plumbers putty off the tub, put some new
putty around the bottom of the new drain and screw it back in
place of the old one. Clean off the excess putty that should have
been squeezed out around drain and Done!
Less then 30 min. The tool and parts available at Lowes, HD or
other local stores with plumbing parts.
The only possible problem is if you have to twist so hard to get
the old drain off that something breaks. Then it's time to take
the tub out or go through the wall to redo the drain pipes.

Once the stopper is removed, there seat that provides the other half of the
seal is still mounted in the tub. If that seat has corroded, can it be
restored or would I need to remove and replace that?
