MB's rated capacity in Europe is often much higher than MBUSA's rated capacity unless it's an SUV and MBUSA wants to brag about towing with it. IIRC the usual rating is 750kg unbraked, 1750kg with brakes.
When I was looking for a S210 hitch, the best anybody in USA seemed to make for it was class II / 1500lb. I suspect that will hold true for just about any non-truck, including a W211. When I bought a used propane tank and the seller agreed to deliver it, he showed up with his dad's Town Car with a class II 1 1/4" receiver hitch, towing a 18' aluminum equipment trailer with my 800lb propane tank on it. I don't know if the trailer had brakes, but the Town Car did not have a brake controller, it had a four wire light hookup.
