My neighbor when we lived up near Boston comes over one day and tells me to come see something. This was like '91 or '92. In his garage he has a 1956 XK140MC fixed-head coupe, black with red interior. The MC ("modified") engine was the LeMans engine. It had been sitting at another house since 1961/62 or so and he decided he was going to sell it and had it dragged to the house next door. He wanted $10k which was a decent price for the car (and might have made me a better special price because we got on well), other than not having been driven for 30 years it was in good shape, the (wide white wall) tires on chrome wires/knockoffs held air, all the bits including custom-fitted leather luggage for the back "boot" was there in nice condition. Engine was clean and turned over. Only thing missing was one door panel that the trash guy had thrown out when he came to get the barrel (service in the early 60s!)as he had it sitting next to the trash can in the garage while fixing the window lift.

He had bought it from a dentist who had bought it new for his wife who was scared of it so he sold it a year or two later to my neighbor, who drove it for a coupla years until he had kids and parked it never to be driven again. It was actually a beautiful car, I had never seen a coupe before but it had nice lines and a fair amount of room inside and I could actually fit though it was a bit tight for 6'4" me.

I seriously thought about it but my wife was starting medical school about then so the money was a concern. He ended up selling it for more to some older guy who was going to fix it up for his girlfriend, I just about cried when the guy came with a flatbed to get it.

Anyway, we talked about the car, he told me he got stopped in NH at some point, late one night, the cop said he was going north of 120 because that was all he could measure. Neighbor figured he might get 130 or 140 (per the XK140 designation) out of it. I looked at those skinny little tires and shuddered...

Here's one for $175k.... http://www.rosnermotorsports.com/1956-jaguar-xk-140-mc-fhc.htm

Long story short, nothing the PSP had on the road had even the remotest
chance of catching the thing, so they radioed ahead for a semi to park
across the road as a roadblock.

Trooper: "Buddy, just how fast do you think you can GO on the Pennsylvania
Turnpike?"

Frenchie: "Move the truck, M'sieu, and I weel SHOW you!"

This must be a European thing, taking cell phone photos of a speedometer
showing an ungodly speed. A couple of weeks ago I met a German guy who had
one of his Audi A8 V-12 speedometer doing 240 kph (150 mph), but that was
on the autobahn, where that's all right. I think the national speed limit
in the UK is about 75 mph, same as Nevada, though Utah and Idaho have some
80 mph roads.

Dan could beat that if he bought a 600 or AMG and jazzed it up.
