I am skeptical that the baster will last very long once it has touched
brake fluid. Maybe check with the local Dollar Tree and treat it as
disposable?

I used a long length of thin, flexible hose and gravity last time I
did a change. To prime it I used the hand pump (actually I think it's
officially an oil pump) that I usually use with the fish tank - once
the fluid has pulled far enough you should pull the lower hose and
keep it from going through the pump assembly.

As an aside, do not let the brake fluid or vapor get near your mouth!
It's tempting after the pump gets loose the first couple times, but I
can pass along the experience that it is -not- worth it - just do it
right by using the pump to prime. :)

Best,
Tim
