I'm curious, too. There *are* simple ways to create parallel hybrids -- for example, a "road-coupled" hybrid where you have the electric motor connected to one set of wheels and the gasoline engine connected to the other. The series hybrid is conceptually simpler but requires a seperate generator and a larger electric motor, so it drives up the cost and weight. In a parallel hybrid the same device can serve as both motor and generator.
