Not to speak for JB, but he doesn't mean a socket wrench. The reason for leaving one of the bolts in using his method is because it is the longest bolt and thusly impossible to re-insert into the oil filter housing once it is back in place due to clearance issues with the steering gearbox.

Granted, on a 240D, you've got a _little_ more room to play around than in a 5 cylinder, but that doesn't mean the job is particularly pleasant the first time around.
