If you particularly like that engine type then the 6.5 version with the mechanical injection pump would be a bit better in the Blazer. Gives a bit more power for light duty use like that and should still do 22-24mpg. In a Chevy van I was getting 20-21mpg combined driving on average. You will want to get something like a manual tranny or the L80E type auto. The earlier 700R4 wasn't as good and usually needed a rebuild every 100,000 or less.

A good, tough, reliable engine by most measures. Not super powerful but unlikely to break other components. I'd love to have one in a Blazer...
