That wood won't hold up even with your coating (which I think the little
beasties will like to eat). Cedar or cypress a better choice but it is
pricey. Or treated wood (the new stuff doesn't hold up very well either
but better than regular lumber, even with the coating) lined with pool
liners or rubber roofing material or something like that. There is a
guy up the road who is building some and lined them with sheet metal
roofing material ("tin") in treated wood frames, which I thought might
be interesting.

How about gardening?
I've been building raised beds for our garden. We don't farm that much here, 2
beds, 10x3. Angie has wanted me to raise the beds for years which should make
weed control easier.I meant to make them out of 2x8, I asked for 2x8s but
somehow ended up with 2x10s. I'm coating them with a mixture of pine tar,
turpentine and boiled linseed oil. I didn't want to use PT wood in the garden,
who knows what would leech out of that stuff. Nothing in my coating (its not
really paint) should hurt us any.
The pine tar is really thick so I heat it all on a camp stove to make it liquid
which helps it seep in. Leave it in the sun a couple days and the mix
polymerizes, kind of like seasoning a pan.
One bed is installed, the other is all coated and ready to put in but theres a
lot of digging involved, maybe Sunday if the weather holds.
