Actually you can boot from a USB drive forever even. I keep a copy of Puppy
Linux on a USB drive at my parents house so I can use their computer without
messing up any of their settings. They use a really big desktop resolution that
drives me crazy... When I'm done I pull the USB drive and its their computer
again. Puppy is super lightweight and runs fast even on older hardware.
The only downside is that shutdowns are slow because the OS runs from RAM and
everything needs to be written back to disk when you're done.

Yes, you can boot from a USB drive and try it before installing it on the PC.
