They can be pretty loud. Like, rod knock loud. Sounds sorta like someone smacking the cylinder head with a hammer, hence the name. To determine if it's an injector, loosen the fuel injector union nuts one at a time with the engine running. When you loosen the one for the bad injector, the noise will stop. If you've ever hunted for a misfiring cylinder on a gasoline engine by disconnecting spark plugs wires, this is a similar concept. :)
