Was the tank level very low? Perhaps there's some junk near the bottom of
the tank and yit got picked up and sent to the filters & IP?
As you no doubt know, the diesel will run as long as its getting air and
fuel - for fun check the air filter although you probably know its in good
condition or changed it recently - still, its possible although restricted
air inlet usually shows as restricted RPMs - (can't rev above, say, 3000rpm)
so as everyone else (except Kaleb) suggests it fuel, I'll vote for the same
source of the problem.
The last fill-up may have been bad or had a high level of moisture in it ---
worst case, drain the tank, check the outlet strainer (I assume it has one)
and replace the other fuel filters. Even if you have to get a shop to do it
while on the road shouldn;t be outrageously expensive.
Perhaps someone on the list can suggest a shop in your area? Since its
Friday, today it your best bet if you need help or parts -
Man! I hate these semi-mysterious problems!
Good luck -

Subject: [MBZ] '90 300D 2.5 died on me
We drove to Albuquerque from OKC today - just got here. After the
final ten miles at only 65mph, I pulled off I-40 at my exit, came to a
stop light, where the engine promptly died. It took a bit of cranking
to start, and I had to hold throttle to keep it running. Same thing at
the next light. It worked fine at the third and forth stops.
Any idea of what might have caused this? It's the first time I've
experienced anything like it in a Diesel.
TIA -
