She's a speech/communications specialist/researcher, etc. 30+ years experience; at Northwestern U. for many years 'til U of Iowa wooed her away years ago; 'took a $4-million research grant with her. Occasionally lectures at Oxford (the one in UK, not MS), Australia, Paris, others.

Hey now! A Boilermaker! That gives her cred to drive any damn thing she wants, even if she graduated from the socialist studies department.

I'm thinking an older Jeep Wrangler with some Sierra Club stickers and a kayak/bike rack, just so it doesn't look like she might (gasp!) go off-road and trample sensitive landscapes. Or, the Subaru is always acceptable. I think it might still be Too Soon for the German car, but since the Japanese were victims of a nuking they are rehabilitated. Although German actions could be seen as supporting the Palestinian zeitgeist, that consideration could be too subtle for unreconstructed professors in the mathematics or engineering divisions of the school.

And of course, no one can go wrong with a Pious with old Obama/Biden and new Bernie stickers.

Wilton, these are not critical comments directed toward the niece; rather, they are legitimate concerns for motoring amongst the university environment, shared by motoring enthusiasts with knowledge of a variety of makes and models and their inherent micro/macro-aggressive connotations that could violate safe space needs.

It is iowa city, home of the most PhDs pumping gas (or checking walmartians out) in the world. They walk or ride cambus there between home, the farmers market, New Pioneer, and campus. The car will sit until she needs to drive to CR for a H-> (ride to hell) rally. So not many faculties will see the car.

The undergrads, for the most part, get degrees in basketweaving (gender studies, minority studies, etc) and then work for the goobermnt, become "teachers" or faculty, or minimum wage communist party "workers." (drones)

Whoa whoa whoa! Curly what are you thinking? Niece is a "College Professor". She could lose her tenure, show up on campus in a nice big Mercedes.

She's already pushing the limit, way outside the Subaru / Toyota / Honda fold. An old C class is really taking a lot of risk, I don't think we have any business recommending anything more than C class.

The more she pays for the car, the more she can complain about the big mistake it was, and the tongue-wagging libs can sympathize and lecture about returning to the jap car fold next time. She can nod along, "What was I thinking?", and drive the c-class for a few years.

I think she needs to get that expensive old one that Wilton posted.
