OK, I give up. What is the "cigarette butt repair"?
The usual problem is that the pins that go into the diagnostic socket contacts don't quite reach in all the way, and as things loosen up the connections get bad and it stops working. The butt repair is to pop the circuit board out of the can and stuff a butt behind it. This forces the pins to protrude more where they make better contact. -- Jim
