In my dad's case I sold the farm when my mother died (it was in her name for estate reasons) and the money went into a trust for his needs, medical and whatever. He gets SS and a pension too, so that is some monthly income. He had a stroke in 99 or so and that has limited his mobility and ability to dress, bathe, etc. He was in an ALC for a long time after my mother died until he sorta gave up taking care of himself after some medical issues and I had to get him in a nursing home which is 24x7 care. At the ALC he had a little room, like a hotel room, and the aides would come and help him get dressed and whatever. There was a dining room where he went to eat, and they had various activities to keep everyone engaged.

The trust is running low, so when that runs out his NH will have to get paid from his SS, pension, and IRA distributions, which should keep him going for awhile. He will be 87 at the end of the month, aside from being pretty much bedridden his health is OK for 87 so who knows how long that will go on. I think once one's $$ runs out then maybe Medicare or one of those gummint things will pay for it (and of course they bill medicare a lot less than a cash customer).

Or there is the tree alternative that I prefer.

So how do people pay for that? Does insurance pay for it? Does the state? If
people are paying that much themselves I would think they would run out of
money pretty quickly.

The nut on those places probably starts at $4k a month or so and goes up
depending on how many changes of your Depends you need every day. My dad was
in one for several years, in a nursing home now, you don't even want to know
about that...

There are a lot of places down in Mexico now that are doing that, and they are
way cheaper. People say they like them.

I told my kids to take me out and tie me to a tree in the woods when I get
feeble.

I was driving down the road today and there was a commercial on the radio
talking about some new assisted living place opening soon and how they were
fixing $3000 off the first months rent. Holy hell I would hate to see how much
the rent is. If I'm old I will just stay at a Mexican resort or go on continual
cruises for cheaper.
