Well, since I have a 1980 300SD which I've had for over 20 years and had the
leather and pads replaced....I'll chime in here. It is leather and probably
what you can still get. The paint should last awhile, mine was repainted about
15 years ago and still looks good, clear coat and all. Yes, he should have used
the softer, felt/fleece look carpet, especially for up the console. This carpet
is too harsh. As to the engine blow by and leaks, he may be using that
wonderful synthetic oil. The old 617 turbos of that era don't tolerate
synthetic that well and run better on dino. Yes, he's asking too much, but if
you're interested, offer less and replace the carpet. Unlike the 126 with its
plastic sides hiding rust and poor seat construction (they constantly rip), the
old 116 will last forever. Mine is still going with around 425,000 miles and
yes on dino oil. I've only replaced the tranny at around 420,000 and the
interior as I said about 22 years ago. It still has the original exhaust, IP,
turbo, etc.
Just some personal info to add.
Best Wishes,
Roger
