Speaking of dumb, this reminds me of a story about US POWs in an NVA prison camp. Many of the prisoners were US pilots, but one pilot (an officer) shared a cell with an enlisted guy. The NVA interrogated and tortured the pilots regularly, but the enlisted guy was just a poor dumb country boy, so they left him alone after they decided he must not know much. He asked if the prison guards had any work that he could do, so they started assigning him cleaning duties (which came with lots of abuse and ill treatment by the NVA) like cleaning toilets and keeping the grounds clean and such. At first the pilot resented this and felt sorry for himself and his lot in life, but then one day he noticed that the enlisted guy pouring dirt into the fuel tank of an NVA vehicle when he thought no one was looking... Turns out "country boy" was playing a part so that he could continue to resist in every way he could.
