I own a 1978 280SE which was built for the California market and has spent her
entire life here. She has somewhere around 150000 miles and runs quite well
after various repairs and replacments of parts. I am experiencing a couple of
strange things...about a month ago I replaced the original type ignition coil
(was 1 year old Bosch unit) with a 40000 volt unit and at the same time
installed triple platinum plugs...curiously it cured a warm running problem
(had recored radiator installed to no avail over a year ago) but now I had to
advance the timing to around 2 degrees to compensate for the more powerful
charge...but I have a strange slight sputtering at idle...it goes away when the
timing is advanced to 3 or more degrees but then I swear I hear the valves
ticking away...am I damaging the engine by doing this? I have spoken to a
couple of guys who seem surprised that the specs call for the timing to be set
at 0 degrees top dead center...is this for California emissions?
The other question is regarding brakes...I replaced the front calipers and
pads plus installed another brake booster and brand new master cylinder...I can
feel a strange rubbing sensation when the car is barely moving and I gently
touch the brake pedal...it seems more prevalent in reverse.
My car is used as a daily driver and she has never failed me-over the past 2
years I have invested something like $3000 in parts and labor in having the
steering box changed, all rotors, fuel pump, new radiator, a/c servo and all
the usual stuff that goes and intend to keep the car indefinately. Any and all
advice would be appreciated.

You most likely have other worn parts. Give it a full check-up and
fix it before cranking the adjustment on the steering gear.
