Bob,
Sorry to hear this-Johnny B is right we just had to put down one of our
goldens, probably about 12 years old-in otherwise great shape-because of
colon cancer. If you see suffering and have a good vet who is not just
selling you stuff, you will know the moment if you need to. .

I had a Great Dane that was afflicted with it. He was over 12
years
old (which is very old for a Dane) and the disease had spread far and
wide. I did the humane thing when pain was obviously getting the best
of him.
The first indication was what appeared to be a pimple on his
hind
leg. A tumor was growing at that location and some X-Rays showed
longitudinal cracks in another leg.
I love animals and have a loathing for small animal vets who
advise
people to spend many thousands of dollars on treating a terminal
illness. I know its hard to do but euthanizing a pet is sometimes
best. Perhaps some day we'll be able to legally euthanize our loved
ones when they can't take it any more.
One of my friend's parents spent over $36,000 keeping a
defective
Rottweiller alive. At 8 months it was having major problems and they
bought it another 4 1/2 miserable years of suffering and carrying it
outside to relieve itself. The dog spent a major portion of its life
at the vet. Both the vet and the owners should have been shot.
