I personally have trouble believing they had 5 months of food aboard for two people and two dogs, all of whom look pretty good. I suspect more like 5 weeks or so, although it's possible they were out there a couple months.
Not more. And yes, people are quite stupid. They should have been able to get to Tahiti with automatic sailing if they had any idea of what they were doing, and you should NEVER undertake a trip like that if you cannot do open ocean navigation.....
