Yep, and on the engines you mention, check to see if they are hydraulic valves (don't need adjustment) or mechanical, that will need adjustment.

I've run OM603s hundtreds of thousands of miles and NEVER adjusted the valves! ('cause they are hydraulic and don't need to be adjusted)

An '85 190D has hydraulic compensators (lifters) that don't require routine adjustment.

LOL, my '85 190D would just barely best 43mpg and I never once adjusted the valves ;) Best I ever did with a 240D was 32mpg. My Jetta regularly hits 55mpg. I'd sure like to find another gen3 Jetta that isn't all rusted out...
