There is more than just a fuse in there. Also, I've had the fuse contacts
loosen up on one.

It definitely didn't blow the fuse... even the old one. But the replacement
did remedy the rough engine problem

If the socket for the relay was dirty it could still be the OVP
system acting up.  Or a number of other things, of course!  If
the OVP trips it blows the fuse (standard crowbar overvoltage
protection mechanism), so your alternator is not doing that.
