So you have the smooooth shift without the benefit of the lower RPM when driving. I wouldn't want an 85 transmission unless there were no other options.

So I must have the best of both worlds, an 83 300TD that has an 85
differential in it. I do like that for the lower RPM on the highway but it
does impact just slightly on the acceleration. The mileage seems to be very
slightly better with the 85 diff but then it may be just that I've slowed
down a bit.

I do still have the old transmission in it so the shift has not changed. I
can still and do like the fact that I can feel it shift.

Not everyone. I like the '85 123. It is the most refined of all of
them, and it had the best gearing. Usually, the last model year(s) of a
production run are the best. The 210's bear this out also, I believe. ‎

So you like them for driving and the others dislike them for fixing.
