Are we talking about the southernmost point in the USA - on the big island?
My son and his wife went down there in a Jeep and said they had to get off into the ditch more than once to avoid the crazy locals in jacked up pickup trucks who were intent upon hogging the road.

no, no need.  The smallest rental car will get there and back with no problem.  The road is paved by the wind farm.  It is paved all the way to South Point.  You need yer feet or a cheep to get to the green sand beach from South Point.  Not wise to try taking a rental cheep there.  It might cost you a VERY expensive tow.   It is a nice hike.  Take water and sunscreen though!
