Kaleb. The "toaster racks" between old style series plugs are air cooled resistors there to drop the voltage across each plug to about a volt each, grounded at the end to complete the circuit.
With the pencil type plugs each has its' own wire and a full 12 volts, no toaster racks. If you want to use one wire on pencil type plugs, a short thick wire must go between each of the 4 plugs directly, no racks and NO ground at the end, (or you will ground the complete circuit.) VW used a thick-ish copper strap to connect all pencil style GP's. One end to power. Remember that you are talking up to 80 amps on 4 cold plugs. All parts of the circuit, on a single wire system, must be capable of passing up to 80 amps safely. Feel free to be confused and blame me. Fred. Fred Moir. Lynn MA.
