When I lived in the Champlain Islands pretty close to the lake, we had a rat
come into the house one spring when the water was high. He was wild and bold
and had little fear of humans. We kept the dog food sack in the side door
vestibule above the concrete steps to the basement, and one day I heard a
crunching from there. Opening the door, I saw the rat look up mid-crunch for a
moment. I said "'Be right back", then retrieved my .22 S&W J-frame and a CB-cap
round I had on hand. A .45 would not have been a good idea with the concrete as
a backstop!

When I arrived at Tyndall AFB in Florida, I rented a mobile home
off-base. One evening I cleaned my father's 1911 and was putting
it back together when a rat came out from underneath the kitchen
sink counter. I was very tempted to put the magazine back in and
blast the critter.

Later, when I was talking with my landlord, I told him about the
episode. He said, with some excitement, "You should have shot it!
I have been trying to get that thing for a while now!"

I was still hesitant and was not sure I would that if it appeared
again.
