I thought 98 and 99 were the bad ones, so I was sort of surprised that you included 00 and 01 in your earlier response. The first ML I drove had a huge exhaust leak under the hood and didn't want to go, felt like massive torque converter slip. I think the guy wanted $1750 for it. It was a pleasant shade of green, but I ran away without making a counter offer. I think that heap was a 99.
