I have to give a nod to a 90's V10 Dodge. Strong, durable, relatively
trouble-free. Terrible gas mileage, but that works in your favor for purchase
price. My '96 was $2500, with some issues. 300HP, 450 lb-ft torque, 12mpg.
How many miles/year does he expect to put on it? We use ours relatively
little, the gas mileage is nearly irrelevant. For us it's around-town hauling
and 4wd backup, and the camper lives on the diesel. (Even with the camper on
it the '97 diesel gets better mileage, but that truck, pre-accident, was worth
$20,000. You can buy a _lot_ of gas for $17,500!)
