What difference does that make if you have no
reference point as to how far the temperature
stick is in the container? At that point you might
as well stick a coat hanger down there and say
'well there is fluid on the end so I must have the
right amount in there.'
That said I can see how you can get a more exact
measurement due to the temperature of the oil if
the stick is made for the vehicle and is in the
correct distance from the top of the tube.

Various fluids have various thermal expansion coefficients. (As do
solids.) Consider the mercury or alcohol used in a traditional glass
thermometer. ATF is fairly 'bloaty' with temperature, I believe.
The fluid temperature will at least depend upon how hot it is outside
and how hard you have run the car ...
The ATF is run through the radiator, to try to cap its upper
temperature. As a first-order approximation, after a good long run it's
at engine temperature.
If one, like Clay, is concerned that there is enough ATF in
the transmission, saying one can determine the ATF level in
the transmission by measuring the ATF temperature is nonsense.
