My great uncle Paris had one like that when I was maybe 13 or 14. He called it 
"Little Joe". It lived down by our camp, he'd drive out and the bird would see 
his car and come running. IIRC he fed it Cheerios but I might be 
miss-remembering that because he fed everything Cheerios.

This picture could inspire a good halloween costume.

It is actually a grouse who adopted some people we know.  It adopted 
them, and follows them around when they are outside.  They don't feed 
it.  When they are inside, it does normal grouse things.   It is named 
"chicken"  She can go outside and call "Chicken" and it will come 
running.   It whirrs, chirps and squeaks very much like a guinea pig.

It is a great non-pet pet.   (or no maintenance companion)
