I have read reports claiming that cougars can avoid leaving prints or otherwise somehow are particularly hard to track. I have not had contact with any, so have no such personal experience, but I do not underestimate the intelligence of wild critters. We do have frequent credible sightings of cougar in my neighborhood.

She was out with her daughter walking the dog in the snow, to go down the road a mile or so to get the mail. When they came back they saw cougar paw prints right in their boot prints, it was following and stalking them and was not too far behind. It was using their prints for “cover.” They could see where it broke off to get off the road.
