The first one I saw was in 85-87 or thereabouts. It was a mazda 626,
and I was amazed when the owner folded down the back seat and shoved
long stuff in the trunk.

Those seat backs are a standard item on most cars these days - both the
2012 VW and the current Subaru have them. Very handy for runs to the big
box home stores when you didn't think to take the truck.
