So what is the real name of them? A # like most MB's?

I think officially they were marketed only as model names like every other MB until the advent of the /8 "Strichacht" w114/w115 in 1968. "S-Class" wasn't used until the the w116 and the silly notion of assigning everything a "class" didn't start until the palace coup in 1994 when the marketing department usurped the engineers. Most names like Ponton, Adenauer, Pagode, Heckflosse, Gullwing, Mustang, etc weren't official and/or didn't come into use until after the cars ceased production.

This site has a great explanation of the history of the Ponton name: http://www.mbzponton.org/valueadded/other/whyponton.htm
