That looks like a pretty sweet little unit. 1800 RPM, which is what
you really want rather than the usual rope-pull generattle that's pounding
along at 3600 RPM. But that price!

> And what is the transformer for?

Likely it was used for load balancing. Such 120/240 generators have
TWO output windings, 120V and half the power each. If you hook such
a generator up to the usual split-phase 120/240V home, you could be
limited to only half the generator wattage, because if you overload either
output winding you can damage it. (Do you know which outlet or light is
on which phase of your split-phase feed? I don't, and I doubt you do either.)
Many cheap rope-pull units are killed this way.

By using a heavy 120/240V transformer as well, you feed that transformer
with 240V, and it supplies the wattage to the home, balancing the load against
both windings in the generator equally.

I have this at home now, on my rope-pull that usually runs the house.
(Big Bertha rarely gets used, it's a hungry, hungry hippo.)
