Re 98 E300 tensioner bolt.  A TimeSert thread repair would be far superior to a 
helicoil.  I may have the size needed and would be willing to lend you the 
tools needed. What diameter,pitch and length

A crusty old biker out on a long summer ride in the country pulls up to a 
tavern in the middle of no where, parks his bike and walks inside..

As he passes through the swinging doors, he sees a sign hanging over the bar:

Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary payment, the ole' biker  
walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractive female 
bartender who is serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled farmers.

She glides down behind the bar to the ole biker.

"Yes?" she inquires with a wide, knowing smile, "may I help you?"

The ole biker leans over the bar, "I was wondering young lady," he whispers, 
"are you the one who gives the hand-jobs?"

She looks into his eyes with that wide smile and purrs "Why yes, yes, I sure 
am".

So you and Dan are suggesting it's just a coincidence the audio died 1/2
hour after I unplugged a speaker?

Another thing, I started getting 'no CD changer' error this spring. It
was working fine last year. Is it possible, even probable, that putting
an optical bypass on the changer will bring it back to life?

Will going to OBDII and pulling/clearing the audio codes help me at all?

Are the top hydraulics more reliable on the 2nd Gen SLK?

I'm used to seeing 30-50k odos on the $8-10k SLKs, but that was when the
15 year old cars were R170s.

I suspect, given ?RO's past reputation, that any plastic part exposed to
the elements will die of UV poisoning in short order.
But I could be wrong.

Just beware - I made the mistake of buying one of their w124 grilles when I had 
my last E420, and it was a POS. The tolerances were horrible and the finish 
sucked. The edges of the metal weren?t deburred, for example, so it was like 
working with a $20 desktop computer case. I never put it on the car. I threw it 
away and took my $60 beating. not a cheap lesson, but a lesson nonetheless that 
I?m not proud of.

This is what SWMBA deems reliable transport.  Given the more recent quality 
issues DBAG has suffered and the few years MB has been in the AK market, there 
was no reasonable option of having a Benz here.  Dealer is clueless about 
anything made prior to the current century with shallow tech talent.  I found 
but one indy shop in the state.

There are only third or fourth tier dealerships in the state.  There are 
constant ads for tech employees to man service centers no matter what brand.   
May as well bit the bullet until I can escape back to the real world and snag a 
Landy II or FJ 45 out of Mexico

Working on my fathers 98 e300 doing routine maintenance. Noticed the belt 
tensioner was cockeyed. Typical. On this car the tensioner was loose with the 
PO and he I believe used some lock tight and tightened it back down. The 
threads were somewhat stripped out. I was aware at some point it could become 
an issue. When I removed the bolt it was tight, not loose so I?m sure the 
tensioner is just worn out. When I go to replace it I don?t think I?m going to 
be able to crank down on it like normal.  It appears the first half of the 
threads are stripped so it?s just grabbing with the back half. Think I should 
clean it up real good and used either red or blue locktite? What about JB 
welding it? What about running a tap down the hole to clean it up? Anybody know 
what size it would be or if that would even work?  See photos and video below.

Time for a Helicoil thread repair kit.
That mounting is a high stress area, with a repeated high failure rate.. It
needs full thread contact and regular inspection of the bolt for working
loose.

Spend the money and time to repair the thread, It should last for a good
while... Don't repair it, just kluge it with JB or something, and when it
lets go and the pulley/ belt/ fan eats whatever is handy at highway
speed... you get to buy lots of new parts and labor...

Your call... Helicoil repair kit would be mine..
