Kevin,while the 2.6 is a 6 cylinder gas, the 2.3 is a 4 cylinder gas engine.
The 2.6 is shoehorned in and is hard to work on and not much faster than the
4 cylinder model.

The early 190D is economical but not much faster than a W123 240D.

If I can be of any help out here in the Palm Springs area, let me know.

Hello everyone.

My sister in So Cal is looking at Mercedes 190E's, the latest one being a
1992 190E 2.6 with 112K miles on it for $3300. The car is for her
fiance's
daughter, so they want to find a relatively good one for around 3K. The
first one was a $2700 1991 with 166K miles on it that had obvious
vac/climate control problems (hot air coming out the side vents with cool
AC
coming out the center).
Is there a similar buyers guide like that for the W124 for a W201? I'm
sure
that most of the stuff on there would apply to that chassis as well. Are
there any years that should be avoided? Which model year is the best for
these cars, and which engine is the more reliable of the two? Of course,
a
190D, in my opinion, would be best, but...
