My dad used to get "ethyl" all the time when the cars he had did fine on regular.  (When I was little I always wondered who Ethyl was that he would be getting gas from her, or whatever)   For cars that run fine on regular it is a waste of money but if that is all that is available then you get that.

I don't think there is any reason why one cannot put premium fuel in a vehicle that only calls for regular.
