After at least a year of running my Duramax with a couple of bad injectors, I
finally spent $2400 and ordered a set of genuine Bosch updated rebuilds with
the install kit. Truck runs fine but at idle will start smoking like a pot head
who just spent his stimmy check. It’s not real bad smoke at first but if you
let it idle a while, when you take off it will send out an embarrassingly large
cloud of smoke. And not the rolling coal cool kind. The injectors live under
the valve cover and this job seems like it might be similar to replacing oil
cooler seals on a 642. Maybe not quite as bad as the turbo and intake does not
have to come off but there is a lot involved. A lot of these with bad injectors
suffer cracked injector bodies with diesel leaking into the crank case. I do
not have that problem, a couple or 3 of them just don’t fully shut off at idle.
