Sounds like a good vehicle, finally. Yeah there is more to go wrong
with it but if you bought to drive, then... The 722.9s are pretty
strong as long as you keep after the fluid, I was watching some vids
about rebuilding 722.9s, seems like the clutches burn up with bad/old/no
fluid. I think that is what happened to this 06ML500 as the old fluid
was burned and nasty and it seemed pretty low what I drained out.
The 05ML500 towed that 06 home on my trailer, no problems. It has a
722.6 which is pretty strong.

Since the Duramax is down getting injectors replaced, I took the GL up
to Kansas City to pickup my new 2 post lift. The trailer weighs
approx 2k lbs and the lift is about 1500. Towing up empty with 2k and
back with 3500 or so, it averaged about 16.5mpg. This was mostly at
around 70mph. The GL seems to be a great tow vehicle, tows very
smooth and never seemed to have any trouble pulling that weight. Had
to pass cars a few times on 2 lane highways and did not have an
issue. I would be real curious to see how it does pulling a car such
as a 210, 126 etc. If it was closer to 7k lbs, I would imagine the
mileage would be less. My Duramax gets around 14 or so with the
crappy injectors that were in there. When I get that finished up, I
am not sure there will really be a lot of difference between the 300hp
3/4 ton truck and what the GL will do as far as towing mileage. I
would not mind using the GL to tow more, but I am worried about sudden
airmatic failures, or other issues that could pop up while on the road
that parts would not be as readily available. Also seems like it
could wear out the 722.9 faster, not really sure how heavy duty that is.
