As Jaime mentioned, laundry detergent is best. And I recall when this was a topic during Dr. Booth's presence on this list, a key point was to seek out so-called "HE" (high efficiency) detergent intended for front-loading washers. It is the least "foamy". Not sure if that still matters, with the current ubiquity of front-loaders in the US.
I can't see why it would need to be powder. The key point is that it circulate and clean. I would think it would be important to RINSE very thoroughly. AND DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR FUSES!
