I forgot to mention the splash pan. My car isn't so bad, Angie's Golf is
terrible, a big metal bump shield. That car is very low and I bottomed it out
on a manhole cover once and bent the oil pan, the metal shield is to hopefully
prevent a re-occurrence.Fortunately that car has a top mounted canister oil
filter so the oil can be changed from the top...

My old Ford Focus is similar, the filter sticks out the side of the engine
(which faces the back of the car), you can't really reach it from above so you
have to crawl under and weave your arm around the axle to get at it. And of
course oil goes everywhere when you start to unscrew it.

The Nissan Frontier isn't quite so bad, the filter is easy to get to from
underneath EXCEPT you have to remove the splash pan first. You don't spill a
lot of oil removing it, but you do lose an ounce or two.

The Volvo uses a cartridge filter, the canister opens at the top, so it's
pretty clean. A topisder extractor would be useful on that car, because
otherwise you also need to remove a splash pan to get at the oil drain plug.

My Jetta is the worst for the filter because it's in front of the engine
(transverse I4) mounted upside down. So you have to get under the car to remove
the filter anyway, might as well pull the drain plug.

On an '80s vintage Mercedes you could do it all from the top...

For me, the messiest part of an oil change is dealing with the filter, and the
extractor doesn't help you there. Draining the oil into a pan doesn't seem that
big a deal to me, especially since you might need a pan anyway to catch the oil
from the filter (depending on the vehicle and its filter configuration).
