You might be right.  I've no idea how old it is.  Will have to look sometime.

The recovery went flawlessly.  We drove over, dug out the car, put on the
jumper cables, and installed the 'new' belt and pulley.  Checking all the
accessories by hand, the water pump was very stiff, which is not a good sign.
It's probably ready to fail too.  So, I used the old belt from Barney, rather 
than
risk the brand-new belt, just in case it did it again.  (I had a tow rope, too.)

The car started easily, but was a little squeaky.  (Water pump?)  Regardless,
we hopped in and drove the 100 miles back home, no incidents.

Checking the pump at home, it's still stiff.  Doesn't feel 'notchy' like a bad 
bearing,
it's a straight grinding stiffness, perhaps like the drive flange is contacting 
the
face of the housing.  Regardless, it's defective and needs replacement.
