My kids did that constantly. So annoying to go out to the car, needing to get somewhere, and find the "low fuel" light on. Worse because the closest fuel station is also one of the most expensive in the area.
The usual justifcation was "well the computer says 20 miles until empty" so there was enough gas to get back to the station. I told them when they were stranded with a burned-out fuel pump they were on the hook for the towing and the repairs. Fortunately (?) it never happened.
