Since you are nearing retirement, and may not be around to do necessary 
maintenance and repairs, I would stick to popular and easy to work on cars. 
Chevy, Ford, Toyota, etc. While WE may view Mercedes Benz as a reliable and 
easy to repair marque, most of the mechanics and shade tree mechanics are a bit 
intimidated by them. The hood stack crowd and "will it run on vegetable oil?" 
crowd attests to that.

Find him an old 2003-2011 Crown Vic or Mercury Marquis and call it good.
