It would have been easier to just swap the compressor but I was concerned about that rough bearing and I have to go to Little Rock next week so I did not have time to order a new one.  They were over $400 at flaps for a no name one.

Bought a Saturn with dead AC and CEL for dead cooling fan.
PO assured me the AC died before the cooling fan, and a new fan wouldn't fix it. He was right. Cooling fan had a blown fuse, which I discovered after I replaced the fan (oh, well, if the old one blew a fuse it was probably worth replacing).

AC had a dead clutch.
I decided it was cheaper to buy a used compressor for $35 than to buy a new clutch. Then I decided it was easier to swap compressors than to swap clutches while leaving the compressor on the car. Drained the new/used compressor, refilled with proper viscosity PAG, installed, vacuumed (Harbor Freight 2 stage pump) and recharged.
Zero problems in 6 years and 50kmi since then.
