Not approved and restricted are not the same thing. In 2003 we'd be talking
about an ALH or AHU engine like my '89 Jetta. Those do just fine on bio diesel,
I ran quite a bit through my '98. If it weren't for the tin-worm I'd still be
driving that car, it's my favorite.

The next generation PD engines have "mixed" results apparently but up B80 seems
fine. This is the generation where pressures start to get serious. Angie's '05
Golf has the PD engine.

Then you get into the common rail engines, the issue here is the post injection
for emissions. Typical emissions getting in the way. I will say that my '15
Jetta makes no diesel smoke or smell ever. Angie's '05 generally makes a puff
of smoke when it first starts, that puff goes away quickly and there is no
smoke or smell after that.

I’m not Curt and I’ve never owned a VW but I remember having a conversation
with someone around 2003 who told me that biodiesel was not approved for his
then new Jetta diesel.
Another reason to own an older diesel which has no such restrictions!
