Last week when I went on a spree at HF to equip my Flagstaff shop with the requisite tools I wanted/needed to maintain my vehicles, I bought one of their random orbit polishers. I’ve got one at the Florida house that has served me well for some years, so I bought the same, possibly nicer/upgraded version.
Went to use it yesterday to polish some scratches out of the ML350’s finish. Hit the switch and was greeted with a shower of sparks out of the motor vents, accompanied by a rather nasty burning insulation odor. I wondered if maybe there was some oil or lube that was burning off since it was new, so I continued to use it for a few minutes without any change in it’s behavior. I unplugged it and set it aside. Took it back to HF today. Told the guy that I didn’t pay for the additional “flamethrower” option, to which he chuckled and directed me to pull another off the shelf to replace the one I was returning. I was caught up with painting the kitchen and dining room today, so I didn’t have a chance to test the replacement one.
