Old muzzle loading guns come in 2 basic flavors, flintlock and caplock. Caplock guns use a percussion cap to ignite the powder, percussion caps are little copper or brass cups with some goop that explodes when the hammer hits it. The thing the cap sits on is a "cone" or more commonly a "nipple". They look like a squared off grease fitting and on old guns are very often stuck and some are stuck bad.
One of the worst I've ever worked on was an old side by side shotgun with a muzzle that looked like it had been stored in a lake. The cones were pretty beat up and wanted replacing, I soaked them in oil for a few weeks, tapped on them, heat, oil, tap, repeat. After a couple weeks I finally resorted to vice grips and, happily, they both came out. Patience is the key when removing stuck things... After waiting for the Kroil to take effect, I rapped the end of the bleeder screw lightly with my small hammer and tried the vise-grips again. After a couple of tries, it broke loose. So now I can take both of the rear bleeder screws to a parts store and see if I can get a good bleeder screw. Thank you for the suggestions.
